MEALS

When embarking on the Laugavegur, it's important to ensure you have adequate food to sustain you throughout the trek, as the huts provide no meal services. You will need to bring ingredients for all or most of your meals (see restaurant options below), and lightweight, high-energy snacks to keep you fueled during your hike. The huts sell some dried food, as well as light snacks like chips and candy bars, but they are not meant to be relied upon for full meals. You can prepare your meals in the fully equipped kitchens available at each hut.

Ferdafélag Íslands recommends bringing the following food items:

  • Freeze-dried food
  • Noodles or pasta in bags
  • Oatmeal
  • Bread and wafers
  • Crispbread and biscuits
  • Dried fruit, chocolate and peanuts
  • Cocoa, tee and/or coffee
  • Soups
  • Spices, e.g. salt and pepper

Except for freeze-dried food, all of these items can be purchased at any Icelandic grocery store. You will find freeze-dried food at outdoor sports stores and some grocery stores, but these specialty foods might be rather expensive. Alternatively, you can purchase them at home and bring them in your luggage. Keep in mind that Iceland’s duty-free import rules limit you to 10 kg of food, and you may not bring in meat or dairy products from outside the European Economic Area.

Though most of your hike will depend on the food you bring with you, there are a couple of locations to stop for food along the trail:

Álftavatn: The Álftavatn Restaurant is a delightful dining experience where you can find savory soups, and comforting casseroles like chili con carne with rice and vegetables. Vegan diets can be accommodated upon request. There is a small selection of beverages to pair with your meal, including beer, wine, soda, coffee, and tea. They operate exclusively for lunch and dinner, and can also cater to hikers on the go with convenient take-away lunch packs.

Thórsmörk: Volcano Huts operates a restaurant in Thórsmörk called the LavaGrill Restaurant & Bar, where hearty meals and refreshing beverages await weary hikers. The menu offers a hearty breakfast buffet, delicious LavaBurger lunches, and dinner buffets featuring lamb, pork, fish, or chicken. Convenient lunch packages are available for those hiking out from the Thórsmörk area. Vegetarian, gluten-free, and dairy-free options can be provided upon request. Advance meal reservations are not required unless for large groups. The restaurant welcomes both overnight guests and day visitors, with flexible opening hours from 8:00 to 23:00.

Important: If you have dietary restrictions or food allergies and have not yet communicated them to us, please do so as soon as possible.

WATER

Each hut along the trail provides access to clean, cold water, ensuring you can refill your supply when passing by or before departing in the morning. While there are streams along the trail that serve as potential water sources, we recommend filtering and treating water before consumption. Although access to clean water shouldn't be an issue, it's important to utilize your available resources.

HUTS

Here are a few things to expect regarding the huts on the trail:

Sleeping arrangements: Sleeping pads are not necessary as the huts provide bunk beds with either single or double mattresses. However, sleeping bags are necessary. The wardens assign sleeping spaces, so consult them before choosing a bed.

Showers: Showers are available for 900 ISK at all huts except Hrafntinnusker. You can purchase shower tickets or coins from the warden's hut using cash or card. Hair dryers are not provided.

Footwear and wet clothes: Outdoor shoes must be removed in the entrance room, and guests should bring their own slippers, if desired. Wet clothes should also be stored in the entrance room.

Toilets: All huts have water toilets except Hrafntinnusker, which has a latrine. Toilet paper and soap are provided, with toilets typically located in separate buildings.

Electricity and heating: There is no electricity in the huts, so bring sufficient power sources. Battery packs are available for purchase at the huts. All huts are heated, with some using geothermal water and others gas. Gas heaters are turned off at night for safety.

Phone service: Phone connection may be unreliable, and WiFi is not available in the huts. However, 4G may be accessible in some huts and along the trail.

MONEY

Iceland uses the Icelandic Króna (ISK). Before your trip, check the current exchange rates. We typically use XE.com.

The huts will accept Icelandic cash and all major cards. Please note that due to the remote location of the huts in the Icelandic highlands, internet connection may be unreliable at times, affecting card transactions. Therefore, it's advisable to carry cash for purchasing goods or services.
